Nebraska received a verbal commitment from a Texas high school cornerback Thursday.

If only David Whitmore’s pledge to NU were as steadfast and assured as his prowess as a defender.

In recruiting parlance, Whitmore is known as a “soft” commitment.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Whitmore said that although he committed to Nebraska, he will not rule out other options, especially if Louisiana State offers him a scholarship. He accepted NU’s offer on the day it arrived. He hasn’t visited the campus.

Whitmore recorded 90 tackles and 13 pass breakups last season for Memorial High in Port Arthur, Texas, located in the extreme southeast part of the state near the Louisiana border. He reportedly has received scholarship offers from Oklahoma State and Kansas State.

If Whitmore does end up at Nebraska, the Huskers apparently would be fortunate.

“I’ve had four defensive backs sign with Big 12 teams, and I’ll tell you what, David’s as good as any of them,” said Memorial High defensive coordinator Curtis Viola.

Whitmore runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, Viola said. Last season, Whitmore helped lead Memorial to a 6-5 record and a tie for first in its district. His father played safety in the NFL for six seasons, including 1990 for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

“David has some great instincts,” Viola said. “And he’s a good person. Shoot, he has a great work ethic. He’s everything you want in a guy you coach.”

Whitmore becomes the sixth player to pledge to Nebraska’s 2008 recruiting class. Verbal commitments don’t become binding until players sign national letters of intent in February.
