Street racing is believed to have been involved in a four-vehicle collision that left four people hospitalized, one in serious condition.

Lincoln Police Capt. Mike Woolman said two cars were “engaged in a speed contest” southbound on 27th Street Friday night when they collided with a van assisting a broken-down vehicle on the bridge between Theresa and Fair streets at around 10:50 p.m.

According to accident reports, a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire in the right lane swerved to avoid hitting a 1994 Ford Aerostar van, colliding with a 2002 Nissan Sentra in the left lane and the van in the right lane.

The van then hit a 1998 Ford Escort that was broken down in the right lane. A third vehicle stopped in front of the broken-down Escort was not damaged.

Both lanes of traffic were shut down after the accident.

Police jailed the driver of the Sunfire, 28-year-old William C. Lloyd of 6025 Platte Ave., on suspicion of driving under the influence while causing serious bodily injury — a felony — and willful reckless driving.

They also cited the 17-year-old Sentra driver for willful reckless driving, no proof of insurance and no seatbelt.

Jeffery T. Lloyd, a passenger in the Sunfire was taken to BryanLGH West Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Woolman said. Saturday he was reported in serious condition at BryanLGH East Medical Center.

Catina M. Powell, another accident victim, was listed in fair condition at BryanLGH West Saturday afternoon.

" People being careless while driving and putting innocent bystanders in danger...it's a shame. Harsh punishments need to be put into place to teach these people a lesson and to show others what will happen to them if they find themselves in a similar situation. "

" racing was the cause of the accident?? seriously who races a sunfire, escort or minivan?? highly unlikely, unless the sentra driver was trying to act all bad and race those cars since those are the only ones he could beat. if racing WAS the cause maybe lincoln should build the track so people can race legally and not have to worry about injurying other people. " I agree with "concerned mother" We need to tighten the belt on most of the punishments for law breakers with no concern for anyone but themselves. "

" A Sentra and a Sunfire? That's not a street race, that's a joke. "

" All u people who are saying that these people need to be punished for what they did is complete crap. i do agree that someone needs to get punished. i was in a shop neer by and i heard the sentra pass and looked out the window and no one was racing idk where someone got off and saying it was a race. unless u know the facts and where there in the crash or watched it u all can just be quiet. i can guess why someone thought they where racing b/c the sentra had a loud exhaust and when u barely push the pettle it makes a loud noise. also when i saw the sentra pass the sunfire was tailgaiting them so again how was it a street race. my point is if u dont know the facts STAY OUT OF IT. i am remaining anonomous. " If you cause an injury to someone then yes it needs to be a harsh punnishment. If you just get caught doing it on a deserted street then you should be tickited and or car impounded for set ammount of time... "
