Lawmakers consider allowing gay couples to adopt

Unmarried couples — including gay partners — could jointly adopt children under a bill (LB571) discussed by senators on Tuesday.

Lesbian couples were among those who testified in support of the bill, telling members of a legislative committee that joint adoption would provide children more protection by assuring them they would have a legal parent if one member of the couple died.

Currently, only married couples can jointly adopt children, and gay marriage is not allowed in the state. The full 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis refused last summer to reconsider a ruling by its three-judge panel that reinstated Nebraska’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage.

Sen. Lowen Kruse of Omaha, who introduced the bill, said it also would help unmarried heterosexual couples who want to adopt children.

" I sure hope this doesn't get passed. Children should be brought up with a mother and father such as Adam & Eve...not Adam and Steve. The children need to be brought up with a man and women.... and don't give me the comment that there are too many divorces. Let's hear the facts about the gay relationships failing. They fail as much or more I'd be willing to bet. Is there something in Senator Kruse's background that we don't know about or please tell me who is presuring him to put up this crap and waste the States time and money even considering it. "

" Why is our Legislature wasting valuable time on an issue like this when they have issues like education, taxes, healthcare, water, etc. on their table? Thank you Senator Kruse...when will term limits weed you out? "

" What legitimate reasoning is there to not allow to people of the same sex to adopt? Er, I mean, that doesn't involve biblical bigotry? "

" What a great step toward finding homes for children put up for adoption! This will benefit the lives of the children and their adoptive parents! "

" I hate to break the news to some of the dark ages folks lurking on this site but . . . Adam and Steve, Jane and Helen, Lisa and Alice, and many other same sex couples live in the Nebraska and they have happy healthy children. The reason you may not know about them is they are busy taking care of their children while Nebraska's foster care system is full of children dumped by you "normal" folks out there in the Heartland. Whether or not this bill passes, these children will exist. Failing to pass LB 571 will not make them "go away." These are kids who have two parents and deserve just like other children to have a legal connection to their two parents. While this issue may not be important to you (because you're too busy thinking about their parent's sex lives), if they were your children, you'd think this should be a top priority. Try living one day imagining what might happen to your child if you die - no way to assure that his/her other parent will get custody, no way to assure that they won't end up in foster care, no way to provide your social security to them, or wrongful death, or escape from the estate tax. Either you folks are cruel or very undereducated on this matter. There is a web site that explains it if you'd like to get educated before speaking about something you know nothing about: NEAdoption2.org Sorry if I sound snippy but cruelity to chilren because of who their parents are - disgusting. " It is not the job of the legislature to tell people how to raise their children. If you thought your neighbor was too lenient with their kid, would you ask legislature to pass laws restricting their parental rights? No, that would be ludicrous. The job of our legislature is to create laws that are, above all else, fair and equal. So, please, people, ignore what you think should happen in a family and ask yourself what should happen in an equal society. On another note, no objective, founded study supports the claim that homosexual couples are more abusive, more dysfunctional, or more likely to fail when raising kids. Let these American citizens raise their kids how they feel they should raise them, and give them the same rights everybody else is entitled to. Another thing to consider is the children. Regardless if you think it's right for homosexuals to raise kids together, it's going to happen. Should the welfare of the children be jeopradized because you, the homophobic portion of this state, don't agree with their relationship? If you view the children as victims of same-sex couples, why victimize them further by not providing some form of legal parental support? Let's not forget to mention, this bill isn't just about homosexual couples. Unmarried straight couples gain these rights under this bill as well. "

Joe Q's Neighbor wrote on March 22, 2007 9:56 am:
" Let me get this straight - no pun intended. Nebraska allows married people with children to get a divorce which leaves children with two parents who are not married. Nebraska allows single people to adopt which leaves children with only one parent. Nebraska allows single homosexual people to adopt which leaves children with only one parent with no intentions of marrying another potential parent (well, maybe in Mass.) Now we have a group of healthy Nebraska children who are living with two loving parents who are not married to each other and some public policy would prohibit this? That simply isn't logical. Homosexuals can already adopt in Nebraksa and apparently they can adopt any children, other than the children who call them Mom and Dad. The state is sticking it's nose in a dangerous place for all of us. The biological families of these children apparently are in agreement that adoption is in the best interest of the child. Why would the citizens of Nebraska want to turn our children over to control of the State in this way? Shouldn't families decide these issues not Big Government? No logic here - only fear of those rasically homosexuals. Senator Kruse is a minister and apparently a real one that is more interested in children than getting in your pocket book. "

" 1. Adam and eve didn't have sexual orientations, they were simply faced with a lack of options. 2. Children are being brought up in single mother/father homes, how is that less damaging to a student than having two mothers/fathers? 3. Let me illustrate what children of Gay/Lesbian parents are faced with on a daily basis. Only your legal guardian can have you under their insurance. If your legal guardian dies, or becomes fatally ill you can be taken out of the home and placed in foster care. One of your parents can't sign your school papers, they can't sign for your financial aid in college. You are denied all of the simple comforts of having two legal gaurdians. "
