NU gets win in Texas

Andrew Brown hit a home run on his first at-bat of the season, and Drew Bowman threw six solid innings as the seventh-ranked Nebraska baseball team defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 9-1 on Friday in the first round of the Rice Invitational in Houston.

The Husker first baseball, who was seeing his first action of the year, hit a 3-1 pitch over the right-field fence in th efirst inning to pick up his first and second RBI of the season. The two-run shot jump-started the Huskers (4-1), who built a 6-0 lead through four innings.

Jake Opitz went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Thad Weber was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Bowman, starting in place of suspended starting pitcher Tony Watson, scattered seven hits while striking out three. Weber and Steve Edelfsen also saw action on the mound in the late innings for the Huskers.

NU will face No. 6 Rice at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by Florida Atlantic on Sunday at noon.
