Sen. Ernie Chambers introduced a bill Wednesday under which the state would divest public funds from companies that provide “significant practical support for the genocide occurring in Sudan.”

The legislation (LB468) is similar to laws passed in California and other states. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation in September to end state investments in Sudan in an effort to pressure that nation to stop the genocidal violence.

Ethnic violence has killed at least 200,000 people and turned 2.5 million people into refugees in the region since 2003.

" Boy this will get the attention of the Sudan government when the entire United Nations can't. Get real Senator Chambers there are problems in Nebraska that needs attention that you can have a impact on. Why are you taking time on the issues of Nebraska for this stupid bill. How about working on getting the votes to lower our property taxes. How about working on a bill that will force the State to do a performance audit on our different state agencies so we can see where our tax money is really going. What about a bill that deals with the illegal aliens in Nebraska as it seems that the federal government is not going to do anything about it. What about it Senator Chambers work for the people of Nebraska. "

" Divestment strategy helped end the Apartheid in South Africa in the late 80's/early 90's - it has proven to be effective. It is an indirect form of economic pressure that countries like the Sudan have responded to in the past. The Sudanese government responded to economic pressure when Clinton banned trade with them in '97. They'll do it again. The Sudanese government uses 70% of their oil revenue to fund their military, which is currently committing genocide. Foreign companies are heavily invested in their oil. If a significant number of states agree to pull out pension funds/stock options in companies that do business with Sudan, the Sudanese government will have an incentive to end the madness. This legislation will hurt no one but the foreign companies from which we will be divesting. Acting alone, this legislation in Nebraska won't do much. However, we are joining 6 other states that have already passed similar legislation and it will send a message to other states/institutions to do the same.
