Aggie to watch: Stephen McGee
BY STEVEN M. SIPPLE / Lincoln Journal Star
No. 7 Stephen McGee, 6-3, 210, quarterback
Don’t be fooled by McGee’s 8-for-18 passing performance in last week’s 17-16 loss to Oklahoma.
According to our secret scout down South, McGee is actually a very gifted passer.
“He’s a strike thrower in the pocket — he just didn’t throw all that well the other night,” said Rob Childress, the former Nebraska pitching coach who now serves as head coach of the Texas A&M baseball team.
Childress was in attendance at Kyle Field last Saturday night as McGee threw for only 63 yards.
However, McGee is 152-for-243 passing on the season. His 62.6 percent accuracy puts him on pace to better the 20-year-old school record for season completion percentage.
In addition, with only two interceptions, McGee ranks No. 1 nationally in interception percentage at 0.82, just ahead of fourth-ranked Nebraska senior Zac Taylor, who has been picked off three times in 252 attempts (1.19). A sophomore, McGee also ranks as the nation’s leader in passing yards and passing efficiency among quarterbacks who average 40 or more rushing yards per game. He averages 48.2 rushing yards and 181.6 passing yards, and owns a passing-efficiency mark of 138.6.
