The Word with Major Culbert
BY JOHN MABRY / Lincoln Journal Star
Major Culbert, a freshman from Harbor City, Calif., is listed as the No. 2 strong safety on the NU roster, but he was more than just another reserve in Saturday’s 34-20 victory over Missouri.
Culbert played the “joker” backer position, sort of a cross between defensive back and linebacker, in an effort to combat the talents of MU quarterback Chase Daniel. Culbert was among the team leaders in tackles Saturday with six.
Culbert spent a few minutes Tuesday with the Journal Star’s John Mabry.
When did you know you were going to be a key part of the defense?
“I found out Monday I was going to have a really big role. Then Tuesday when I came to practice, we ran the defense. I guess the coaches liked my performance and they had enough confidence in me to put me in the game. It was really exciting knowing that they came to me, and me being a freshman and asking me to step up, which I did.”
Did you ever play joker backer in high school?
“No sir. I never played linebacker ever in my life. I always played running back and corner and safety. But I really don’t care where I play right now. I just want to play on the field.”
What was the highlight for you in high school?
“One game, I had 332 yards, three touchdowns, an interception and seven tackles all in one game.”
What was it like growing up in the Los Angeles area?
“It’s pretty much a big city. It was great growing up. There’s just certain places where you can’t go with a certain color on, but that’s pretty much everywhere in California. I just stayed in sports and tried to stay busy.”
Did you have family and friends at the USC game?
“My mom, my two sisters, my brother, my godfather, pretty much everybody.”
Who are some of the people who have had a real impact on you?
“My brother. He played running back at the University of Wisconsin. Him and my coaches because I grew up without a father, so I always looked at them as a father, and my godfather. He pretty much raised me.”
You’re into theater, is that right?
“I’m majoring in theater arts. It’s going great, actually. I’m a big fan of theater and movies. Hopefully, pretty soon, it will open up for me to act. I want to pursue that as much as possible.”
Who are some actors you look up to?
“Denzel Washington. Everybody.”
Is there a movie or production you saw, when you said, ‘I’d really like to be part of that’?
“The movie ‘Get Rich or Die Tryin’. I know that’s bad, but I just look at every movie and tell myself, ‘Yeah, I could have played that part.’”
If you could be a voice for a Disney movie, what would it be?
“Probably ‘Lion King’ or Goofy.”
Were you in any productions in high school?
“I took drama, and we had plays at the school. I was in the plays, such as ‘Romeo and Juliet.’”
I assume you hope your football career has a better ending than that?
“Yes. I’d like to pursue football as long as possible, knowing that I’m only an injury away from not playing, but I’d sacrifice that. I love the sport. I love the game of football. I’ve been playing since I can remember.”
What’s the Hollywood ending that you envision for this year’s Husker team?
“I’m just taking it one step at a time right now, but I’d like to be a champion."
