Although Steve Octavien’s return to action against Texas garnered a lot of attention this past week, Bo Ruud also drew his share of praise from Nebraska coaches.

“Let me just say this, Bo is becoming a very physical player,” Husker defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said. “He’s very good in the open field. And he’s made a lot of plays. He’s a playmaker, and he continues to get better.”

Ruud, a junior from Lincoln Southeast, currently is second on the team with 44 tackles. Six of his stops went for losses, and he has forced two fumbles.

In last week’s 22-20 loss to Texas, Ruud recorded eight tackles to help lead a strong day for the linebacking corps. Octavien, after missing four straight games with a hamstring injury, finished with 10 stops.

Ruud beat out Octavien for the starting job at weakside linebacker during preseason drills.

“I’m really impressed with Bo, especially with his physicalness in the open field,” Cosgrove said. “For instance, on dump passes he comes up and breaks down and covers up the (running) backs.”

Ruud last season finished with 80 tackles to rank third on the team. His 14 tackles for loss also ranked third.
