In the next two games, Oklahoma State will face the top two scoring defenses in the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska and next week’s opponent, Texas, are ranked 15th nationally, allowing 14.5 points a game.
“We’re to a point we should be successful offensively (no matter who we play),” offensive coordinator Larry Fedora told reporters in Oklahoma earlier this week. “With the weapons we have, if we keep the guys healthy, and keep improving, I think we can play with anybody.”
Like Nebraska, OSU has made huge strides on offense from last season. The Cowboys are 10th in rushing, 41st in passing and 12th in total offense. A year ago, they were 48th in rushing, 98th in passing and 92nd overall. They’re currently averaging 37.4 points a game; in 2005, their highest total was 34 points. With five games to play, they’ve already scored 40 more points than last season.
LION-HEARTED COURAGE: Junior cornerback Martel Van Zant, who is deaf, is a nominee for the Orange Bowl/Football Writers Association of America Courage Award. Requirements for nomination include displaying courage on or off the field, including overcoming an injury or physical handicap, preventing a disaster or living through hardship. Van Zant has 29 tackles and a sack.
A HIGH RATE OF RETURN: How young is Oklahoma State? If the season ended now, the Cowboys would return 100 percent of their rushing and passing yardage next year. Their seniors have scored just 25 of OSU’s 262 points. Additionally, seven freshmen have started.
HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTS: In their first three Big 12 games, the Cowboys have averaged nearly 29 points after halftime. For the first two quarters, the average is just three points.
