Chuck Mizerski, a Lincoln high school football coaching legend, said Thursday night he has coached his last game for Lincoln Southeast.

The Knights fell 23-22 to Fremont in overtime at Seacrest Field.

“It was time, and my wife, Alice, and I decided this would be the last year for me coaching,” Mizerski said. “This team accomplished a lot despite the record (3-6). We had kids get straightened out, get to all the practices and try as hard as they could. That’s all you could ever ask.”

Mizerski, who replaced Frank Solich in 1979, posted a 230-71-1 record at Southeast. He only had two losing seasons at Southeast, where his teams won five state titles and finished as runner-up three times.

" I played for Coach Mizerski when he was coach of the Lincoln Lightning and have to say he is a class act. He will be missed as he steps away from his passion of coaching. Thanks for the memories Chuck, and good luck with all future endeavors. "

" You are only as good as the players you have. SE had great players in past years. "

" It is interesting that Chuck's SE team lost in the playoffs to Fremont in 1979 (his first year) and again in his last year. In between, he beat Fremont just about every year. "

" I taught with Chuck Mizerski during his first few years at SE and found him to be an exemplary person. His concern for all students--athletes and non-athletes alike--made a great school even better. Good luck Coach...Well done! "

" Congrats to Coach Mizerski and his 28 years at the helm of the best high school football dynasty in the state of Nebraska. Coach Mizerski did it with the highest amount of class and integrity. Coaches from all over the state would agree. LSE always got every team's best shot because everyone always wanted to beat the best. In order to be the best you have to beat the best. LSE truly set the standard by which high school football programs measure themselves. LSE is the Nebraska Football of high school football in Nebraska. The comparisons are endless. Decades of Dominance. Consistency. Tradition. State Championships. Long tenures of coaches. Integrity. LSE is simply the BEST! "

" Coach Mizerski will be greatly missed at Southeast and in the Nebraska High School football world. He is without question one of the best if not the best football coach the state has ever seen. His run in the 90's may never be matched again. Not only is he a great coach but he is an even better person. He is a role model and difference maker in the lives of his players. "

" I had the pleasure of working with Chuck with the Lightning and the Capitals. I also coached against him when I was at Lincoln High. I have learned lots from him on and off of the field. You are top shelf, first class all of the way! I will always remember our talks on the bus trips and the "boom boom" room. (HA) You are the best and I am honored to have worked with you and know you. Thanks for everything! "
