Under the Microscope, 10/4: Career highs for Purify
BY BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star
Maurice Purify caught four passes for 91 yards, both career highs, in Saturday’s overtime victory over Kansas. He twice had long receptions to give Nebraska breathing room after the Huskers were backed inside their own 5-yard line.
Quarterback Zac Taylor said Tuesday he’s seeing Purify, a junior college transfer, emerge more each game.
“Watching on film, he gets open,” Taylor said. “Guys are afraid to cover him. That’s the thing. Guys are scared to death he’s going to run by him. He’s getting more confident, and he shows up big in games. He hasn’t dropped a pass I’ve thrown to him yet in a game.”
Taylor said to look for Purify to become more of a threat every game. “He’s a great player already, and once he starts to feel more and more comfortable in our system, he’s going to make big plays for us. He’s going to be a threat as the season goes along.”
* Running back Kenny Wilson had just four carries, all in the first half, but for 33 yards. Twenty-four yards came on one carry. Wilson is the Huskers’ second-leading rusher through five games.
* We saw a bit of true freshman Corey Young at cornerback during a series in which Cortney Grixby was sidelined after being injured. Young missed a tackle on a pass that turned into a 40-yard gain. Grixby was able to return.
* Major Culbert and Rickey Thenarse continue to factor in on special teams. Each was credited with a tackle against the Jayhawks.
