Looking Way Back: Kansas 12, Nebraska 0; Nov. 12, 1892; Lincoln
BY KEN HAMBLETON / Lincoln Journal Star
Under the headline “Kansans Can Play Ball,” and the subhead “A Satisfactory Game, With a Number of Very Interesting Plays,” the Nebraska State Journal reported on the first football game of more than 100 to come between Nebraska and Kansas. The contest was the third game of the season (Nebraska’s third year of playing football.)
Nebraska was coming off a forfeit victory against Missouri. The Tigers refused to play against Nebraska’s George Flippin, one of the first black players in college football.
The State Journal’s story read: “The scarlet and cream did not flaunt victoriously as the crowd of students came from Lincoln park yesterday evening, and the state university yell was not delivered with vociferosity. The cause whereof was that the Kansas university football eleven had beaten the Nebraska boys to the tune of 12 to 0.
“A fair crowd assembled to witness the match, probably over 600 being on the grounds. The university colors of scarlet and cream were displayed in all the usual and a few unusual ways. One of the unusual was the wearing of scarlet fezes with white tassels. There were also quite a number wearing the crimson ribbon that showed allegiance to Kansas university. The colleges about Lincoln were well represented and the different uniforms added much to the picturesqueness of the crowd. The boys from the Episcopal military academy came down in a huge band wagon, and a glittering array of blue and brass they made. The Sigma Chi fraternity trotted out the tally-ho gaily decorated. The horns of all sizes blatted and blared.”
After much play-by-play, the story ended, “The game was very a very satisfactory one, so far as fairness of play on both sides was concerned, and the few differences were dropped without gone far.
“The Nebraska boys made a sturdy fight, and held down their opponents better than most of the teams that have played Kansas this year.”
