Husker to watch: Tierre Green
BY STEVEN M. SIPPLE / Lincoln Journal Star
No. 30 Tierre Green, 6-1, 200, safety
Green has been “very solid” through four games this season, Nebraska coach Bill Callahan said.
Indeed, the Omaha native is tied with linebackers Stewart Bradley and Corey McKeon for the team lead with 21 tackles.
However, “Tierre will be tested more this week, as you see the spread offenses start to emerge (in Big 12 play) — in fact, we’re going to get tested more as a unit,” Callahan said. “We’ll see what happens.”
Green recorded a season-high seven tackles in last week’s win vs. Troy.
“He has filled the run lanes really well,” Callahan said. “He’s come down and supported the linebackers.”
Green has plenty of experience covering wide receivers, having started last season’s first seven games at cornerback. He appeared in every game and finished with 29 tackles and four pass breakups.
“Playing the pass is something you can always improve on,” Callahan said. “He’s steadily improved.”
A graduate of Omaha Benson, Green began his college career in 2004 as a running back, working his way to No. 2 on the depth chart. His switch to strong safety occurred last spring.
“He’s done a great job for us,” Callahan said. “He’s really a bright kid.”
