Under the Microscope, 9/27: Praise for special-teams play
BY BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star
* Nebraska coaches on Tuesday noted the play of true freshman Rickey Thenarse, Corey Young and Major Culbert on special teams. You may remember specifically an open-field tackle Thenarse made on a Troy kickoff return. Young also had two tackles.
“As you watched them develop in training camp and the early part of the season, you could definitely tell they had ability,” Nebraska defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove said. “They continue to get better with their individual work and their teamwork out (on the field). You never really know until you get them in a game situation, and their performance in a game was solid. As they mature and the more game reps they get, the better they will be.” All three players are listed on the depth chart in the secondary.
* It’s not official on the depth chart, although it appears that Kenny Wilson has emerged as Nebraska’s No. 2 running back, behind starter Marlon Lucky. Actually, Wilson has the most attempts (62) of any running back. Each week, Wilson shows signs of improvement. His speed to the edge could be become increasingly beneficial as the Huskers begin Big 12 Conference play. Wilson also had one kickoff return for 27 yards.
* A week after going without a catch against USC, wide receiver Maurice Purify caught two passes for 45 yards against Troy. That included a career-long 36-yard reception.
