The Word with Stewart Bradley, 9/27
BY JOHN MABRY / Lincoln Journal Star
Stewart Bradley, a senior linebacker from Salt Lake City, has been a Husker since 2002, when he joined the program as a walk-on with an academic scholarship. He was a redshirt that year but quickly proved worthy of a football scholarship and has become a standout for the Blackshirts despite battling injuries throughout his career.
You’re the senior leader of the linebackers. Do the other guys listen to you at all?
“I guess they do. I’ve been here the longest, so I’m the wisest of the bunch, but they would never admit to it.”
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a coach?
“A coach once told me that you have to envision that there’s always going to be negative and positive things in coaching and in life. You have to go through your life like you’re carrying two bags. You want to take all the things you can use to help improve yourself and put them in one bag, and all the negative things and things that bug you and things that aren’t going to help you and put them in the other bag and set that bag down and leave it behind.
“Coaches are going to get heated. They’re going to get mad. You have to have a thick skin. If you get worried about all the negative things they say to you, then you’re never going to be able to make it.”
Do you know who’s leading the team in tackles?
“I’m tied with Corey (McKeon) and someone else. Tierre?”
Correct. Tierre Green. Do you know how many?
“No.” (21)
Which of your teammates inspires you?
“Probably (Brandon) Rigoni because he just works so hard.”
Which teammate drives you nuts?
“Probably Zac, Zac Taylor. When we’re in Cover 2 in 7-on-7, he just looks you off and bangs the ball behind you and just jeers at you. But he’s a good guy.”
Which I-back is the toughest to bring down in practice?
“I guess it depends on the situation. If you’re in the open field, then maybe it’s Marlon (Lucky). If you’re in the A gap trying to stop them, it’s probably Cody (Glenn). If you’re out guarding the wheel route, maybe it’s (Brandon) Jackson. And Kenny (Wilson) can be hard in all situations. He’s probably the blend of all those guys.”
Which opposing player has impressed you the most in your time here?
“I thought the offensive line from Oklahoma in 2004 was pretty impressive.”
I know you played rugby (in high school). Are there any rules in that sport?
“You can’t throw the ball forward. That’s a rule. Other than that, there’s not many.”
After football, what do you plan to do with your accounting degree?
“I want to get my MBA in new property development or investment banking probably.”
If I ever get to Salt Lake City, what’s a must-see for a tourist?
“You’ve got to go up into one of the canyons. There are like six canyons, all five minutes from Salt Lake.”
Is it true that the ladies at Bill Callahan’s Football 101 clinic asked you to take off your shorts?
“That was actually true, unfortunately.”
How did you get out of that situation?
“I just shrugged it off, hoping they were just kidding.”
When was your last haircut? Do you remember the date?
“I don’t. It was a couple of weeks before the (Alamo) bowl game.”
Given my unfortunate hair situation, are than any secrets you can share?
“Condition. Condition daily. I don’t know. Hopefully I don’t have to worry about that for a little bit.”
