Bulldog to watch: Eric Newmann
BY STEVEN M. SIPPLE / Lincoln Journal Star
No. 82, Eric Newman, 6-0, 190 pounds, WR
Eric Newman hopes to carry the momentum he built toward the end of last year into today’s game.
A three-year letterwinner, Newman recorded at least one touchdown reception in each of the last five games in 2005, capping the stretch with a successful performance against Fresno State in Louisiana Tech’s season-ending upset. Newman helped spark the triumph with three catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns.
Newman is his team’s leading returning receiver, having made 30 catches for 566 yards and eight touchdowns last season. He will try to pierce a Nebraska secondary that is considered a trouble spot on an otherwise loaded defense.
In addition to his prowess as a wideout, Newman last season returned six kickoffs for 126 yards, an average of 21.0 yards. For his career, he’s returned 55 kickoffs for 1,195 yards (21.7). He has a total of 59 receptions for 1,043 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Although Louisiana Tech finished 7-4 last season, the Bulldogs weren’t invited to a bowl game. They used the snub as motivation during the offseason, said Newman, a native of Oak Grove, La.
“The tough schedule that we played and how we did with it, we should have gotten into a bowl game,” he told the Ruston (La.) Daily Leader. “We had a big upset win over Fresno State in the last game, and I felt that should’ve put us in there.
“It’s definitely motivating us. It hurt when we didn’t go. So now we have to try and prove people wrong.”
