Nebraska has its new men’s basketball coach.

Doc Sadler of the University of Texas-El Paso will be introduced Tuesday as the replacement for Barry Collier, who left last week to become athletic director at Butler.

Sadler greeted reporters and photographers outside the Devaney Sports Center on Monday night but declined comment.

NU athletic director Steve Pederson will hold a news conference at 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Sadler will be without the Huskers' top returning scorer when he starts work at Devaney. On Monday night, Husker center Aleks Maric told the Journal Star that he was leaving the program, saying it had nothing to do with the hiring of Sadler.

Maric, who averaged 10.9 points and 8.1 rebounds as a sophomore, said he made the decision when it became official that Collier would not be returning as head coach.

In two seasons leading the UTEP program, Sadler has compiled a 48-18 record and steered the Miners to the 2005 NCAA Tournament and 2006 NIT.

Sadler, a 1982 graduate of Arkansas, spent his first season at UTEP as an assistant to Billy Gillispie and was promoted after Gillispie left for Texas A&M.

Sadler’s latest team went 21-10 despite the fact that the top six scorers were on the floor for only 10 games all season. In 14 years in the Division I ranks, Sadler has been a part of 11 postseason tournament teams — eight of which played in the NCAA.
