With gasoline prices at about $3 a gallon, Gov. Dave Heineman is encouraging Nebraskans to vacation close to home this summer.

He is promoting a new tourism campaign called “More Vacation. Less Travel.” It is designed to entice Nebraskans to visit attractions close to home such as the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Fort Robinson, Mahoney State Park and Chimney Rock.

“This is a great year to explore and get to know Nebraska,” he said.

" It is still not widely known that Nebraska has become a wonderful destination for some of the finest golf courses in the country - in season, of course. Yet, I have not seen any promotion of this fantastic resource by state government. Virtually from border to border - Quarry Oaks near Ashland, Woodland Hills in Eagle, Wild Horse near Gothenburg, Heritage Hills near McCook, and several others - great golf, not just good golf - can be found far more reasonably priced than just about anywhere in the country. Nebraska golf is at its peak in September when it is much too hot in places like Arizona, Nevada and California, so our climate does not necessarily have to be a liability. Obviously golf does not appeal to everybody, but then again neither does boating or the zoo. Somebody please suggest to Governor Dave to possibly encourage out-of-state visitors, as well as stay-at-home Nebraska vacationers, to try out some of these underappreciated treasures! "

" I think that the Governor has some nerve telling me where to vaction. Our DRN does a poor job with maintaining our lakes for fishing Take a trip to Kansas or Iowa and you will see the difference. I wonder where the Governor will be spending his vacation? "
