Requests help Third Chair set ninth season schedule
Third Chair Chamber Players went to its audience and its own musicians to program music for the group's ninth season.
The chamber ensemble, which is made up of local professional musicians, will play requests that it has collected over the past eight years, and complement them with other works to fill out each of the four concerts.
The 2005-06 season begins at 8 p.m. Sept. 16 at The Loft at The Mill.
"The cornerstone pieces are the ones chosen by Players or audience members, which is fun," Third Chair artistic director Becky Van de Bogart said. "It's a fun way to start the programming."
Requested pieces include Luciano Berio's "Wasserklavier," Libby Larsen's "Four on the Floor" and Erwin Schulhoff's "Concertino."
Third Chair clarinetist Ed Love suggested Mozart's Clarinet Quintet as a way to recognize the 250th anniversary of the great composer's birth. It will be performed at the second concert (Oct. 28 and 30).
Cellist Tracy Sands is planning to recruit one of her students for Franz Schubert's Quintet in C Major during the season-ending event (April 29-30).
Also this season, the Players will welcome back guest artists Rusty Banks (guitar) and Vena Alesio (soprano).
Banks will perform a little-known Schubert Guitar Quartet during the second concert as well as premiere a new composition of his own for guitar and string quartet.
Alesio will give a repeat performance of William Walton's "Facade" during the third concert (Jan. 28-29). Other guest artists for this program are bassoonist Jeff Campbell and percussionist Joe Holmquist.
"This season we are going with a lot of strings and a smattering of woodwinds," Van de Bogart said.
Third Chair will present two performances — Friday/Sunday or Saturday/Sunday — of each program. Friday and Saturday concerts begin at 8 p.m. Sunday concerts start at 3 p.m. All performances are at The Loft at The Mill.
Season tickets — four adult admissions for any combination of concerts — are $60 until Aug. 1 and $64 afterwards.
Single admission tickets are $18 and $5 for students. Children under age 10 are admitted free.
