Diagnosis: Dorn sprained his elbow
It'll be awhile before Johnny Dorn can get his pitching performance at the College World Series out of his system.
Unfortunately for the right-handed freshman, he sprained his elbow during the Huskers' game against Florida on Sunday. While the initial diagnosis calls for no surgery, Dorn will still miss the Team USA Trials this weekend and will not throw all summer.
A first-team All-Big 12 Conference pick and the league's Freshman Pitcher of the Year, Dorn compiled a 12-2 record with a 2.16 ERA. His win total led all freshmen nationally.
Dorn's outing in the 7-4 loss to the Gators was his least effective of the season, as he allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in four innings. It was his shortest appearance as a starter
He injured his arm making a bare-handed play of a second-inning bunt.
Dorn had a magnetic-resonance imaging test on Monday.
"He pitched through it, took some ibuprofen (in between innings) and was fine," coach Mike Anderson said. "The next day, it was bothering him, (but) he made the comment to me, ‘Well, if you need me, I think I'd be OK.'
"I think it's going to be all right, but just (for) precautionary (purposes), we're going to have some specialists look at the MRI, just so we're 100 percent sure with everything. The doctors are optimistic."
Dorn made 20 appearances for the Huskers and threw 104 innings, second most on the team.
Dorn isn't the only pitcher who will be sidelined this summer. Right-hander Dusty Timm, who has been granted a sixth season of eligibility, will have a procedure on his shoulder next week. Timm, who loosened up in the bullpen during Nebraska's season-ending loss to Arizona State, did not pitch in any of the Huskers' final 15 games.
"They think there's an impingement in his shoulder, which is causing tendinitis," Anderson said.
Left-handed sophomore Jon Klausing, who made just two early-season appearances before injuring his back, also is taking the summer off.
Briefly
*Anderson said two players who redshirted — freshman outfielder Deric Manrique and sophomore pitcher Seth Svoboda — and catcher Adam Moore, who missed the entire season with a knee injury, won't return next season.
Moore, a junior-college transfer who was a 28th-round pick in the 2003 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft, returned to his home in Mineola, Texas, in April to care for his ill mother.
*Four-year starting shortstop Joe Simokaitis, a 10th-round pick of the Chicago Cubs who finished his NU career with a 15-game hitting streak, said Thursday he'll begin his pro career in Peoria, Ill. He plans to be in the lineup Monday night for the Class A Midwest League team.
