OMAHA — Alex Gordon is in the midst of another hot streak. Friday, the day after he was honored as Baseball America's Player of the Year, Nebraska's decorated third baseman received the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

The award is considered college baseball's Heisman Trophy.

"So many players have done so much this year," said Gordon, the No. 2 overall choice in last week's first-year players Major League Baseball draft. "I've had a good season, too, but so many other guys have been up there. It has been a bit of a surprise that I've gotten all these awards.

"I'm honored by it and I'm proud to get it."

Gordon, hitting .380 with 19 home runs and 64 RBIs entering the College World Series, got the nod over pitchers Lance Broadway of Texas Christian and Cesar Carrillo of Miami, and Florida State outfielder Shane Robinson.

"A lot of individual things and some awards are going to happen for Alex, but it's an honor to be able to say that Alex has these awards because his focus is all about team and family," Nebraska head coach Mike Anderson said. "I really do believe that these awards have come because his focus is not on himself. That's something that I hope a lot of young men can learn from."

In recognition of Gordon's honor, Nebraska received a $10,000 contribution to its general scholarship fund.

"It's a good thing ... to win this award for the university," said Gordon, who was recognized at a ceremony about seven hours before the Huskers' CWS opener. "I'm flattered to be able to give something back for all they've given to me over these past three years."

Gordon also is in contention for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award and College Baseball Foundation's Brooks Wallace Award.
