University gets nod to add skyboxes to stadium
By The Associated Press
Thirteen new skyboxes to be added to the north end of Memorial Stadium were approved Friday by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.
The skyboxes, which will cost $1 million, will include six suites with 12 seats, six with 20 to 24 seats and one supersuite that could seat 48.
The NU Athletic Department said the new skyboxes will pay for themselves with rental and ticket revenue after one year.
The additional skyboxes are part of a stadium expansion project that began in August and includes a five-level performance area for student-athletes, offices, meeting rooms, athletic computer services, a multipurpose level and additional office space.
The project also includes the installation of an additional 6,460 seats to the north end of the stadium, which now seats 73,918.
"While this project did not start with a plan for skyboxes, it became evident that it made sense to add them," said Athletic Director Steve Pederson. "We have been focused on making this facility great for our student-athletes and fans. The skyboxes are another great addition."
The work is to be done in time for the 2006 football season.
