Svoboda, Eschliman, Marvin are tops in council race

Incumbent Ken Svoboda and newcomers Robin Eschliman and Dan Marvin took the top three spots in a hotly-contested and often contentious race for city hall on Tuesday night, leaving the Lincoln City Council sharply divided along partisan lines. Meanwhile, Kathy Danek, Don Mayhew, Barbara Baier and Keith Prettyman won school board seats and a proposed city storm sewer improvement bond passed. Lincoln City Council: Ken Svoboda* (R)  23,634; Robin Eschliman (R) 21,800; Dan Marvin (D)   18,819; Mark Koller (R)  16,709; Terry Werner* (D) 16,455; Shawn Traudt (R) 15,681.

Lincoln Board of Education: DISTRICT 3: Barbara Baier (D) 1,587; Tony Merritt (D) 1,235. DISTRICT 5: Norman Dority (R) 2,180; Keith Prettyman (R) * 5,302. DISTRICT 1: Kathy Danek* (D)   4,364. DISTRICT 7: Don Mayhew * (D) 2,720.

Voter turnout: On Tuesday, voter turnout was 29.25 percent. Unofficial final results showed 42,242 of the city's 144,371 registered voters cast a ballot. Turnout was higher in the 2003 and 1999 elections, which included a mayoral race. Here's a look at voter turnout from recent city general elections, which occur on odd-numbered years (county elections are on even-numbered years):

2003: 37.2 percent

2001: 25.6 percent

33,537 ballots cast

1999: 38.9 percent
