Cosgrove pleased with defensive play against OU

Nebraska defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove gave credit to his Blackshirts for their performance in a 30-3 loss to Oklahoma.

Cosgrove also gave credit to the Sooners' talented, veteran offense led by sixth-year quarterback Jason White.

"He's as good as I've been around, as good as I've seen," Cosgrove said. "His accuracy is unbelievable, and their receivers are pretty good, too. That's probably an understatement. They're very good."

White, last year's Heisman Trophy winner and one of the leading contenders for this year's award, was 29 of 35 passing for 383 yards and three touchdowns. He also set a school record with 18 straight completions.

"That was impressive," Cosgrove said. "The guy, he doesn't miss. He's very accurate."

Cosgrove said he couldn't blame the Huskers for poor coverage, either.

"I could only remember two instances where the guys were open where we didn't play the coverage exactly like we wanted to play," he said. "For the most part, we had pretty tight coverage, and he just banged it in there. We had guys right next to them, and he threw it right in there."

Cosgrove said the defensive line, facing a veteran offensive front, was unable to generate any pressure on White. Not only did the Blackshirts have no sacks, they also were credited with no hurries.

"Any time a quarterback has a lot of time to throw, especially a quarterback with that ability and those receivers with that ability, you're going to have problems," Cosgrove said.

PRACTICE REPORT: After having Sunday and Monday off from practice, the Huskers returned to work Tuesday at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska will also practice today and Thursday before taking time off at the end of the week. Cosgrove said the team should be healthy for the Nov. 26 home game with Colorado.

ON COLORADO: Nebraska will be facing a Colorado team that has gained momentum recently, particularly on offense. The Buffaloes scored 38 points in Saturday's victory over Kansas State, totaling 382 yards of offense — 157 rushing, 225 passing. It was their highest scoring output during Big 12 play this season. "They're very consistent in what they do," Cosgrove said of the CU offense. "They run the zone play, a very good naked series … that's what they're going to do, run the zones and the nakeds."
