According to the American Football Coaches Association, Southern Miss was one of 29 schools to have a football player graduation rate of 70 percent or higher for the recently completed academic year. The study involves the freshman class from 1998-99, including those who entered at that time but who did not receive financial aid until after their initial year, or who transferred from another school and subsequently received a grant-in-aid.


Southern Miss' graduation rate was 81 percent. Nebraska also was among the schools who earned recognition.

After the first hit is when you find leaders." — Southern Miss defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix, who's watched the Golden Eagles give up just 265 yards and 185, respectively, in losses to Nebraska last year and in 1999.
