NU Notes, 9/10: Horne set to join fray
Nebraska coaches regard their I-back position as being "a committee." Well, the committee will grow by one Saturday.
David Horne, one of four Huskers suspended for last week's opener, could see significant action against Southern Mississippi, NU head coach Bill Callahan said Thursday.
A 6-foot, 200-pound junior, Horne is NU's No. 2 returning rusher from 2003, having carried 107 times for 441 yards and four touchdowns.
"He's worked hard this week," Callahan said after Thursday's workout at Memorial Stadium. "He becomes a real complement with what we're doing with that committee. We were a little short last week, so we can certainly use him this week."
I-backs Cory Ross and Tierre Green both eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark in last week's 56-17 win against Western Illinois. True freshman Brandon Jackson added 79 yards on 13 attempts.
Horne was listed No. 4 at I-back on the Nebraska depth chart released Tuesday after being left off of the first regular-season depth chart. Two other players who were suspended last week also were added to this week's depth chart: Darren DeLone, No. 3 at right tackle; and Grant Miller, No. 3 at fullback.
Nebraska center Richie Incognito remains suspended indefinitely. He hasn't practiced this week.
PRACTICE REPORT: Nebraska's practice Thursday included a heavy dose of red zone work. The Huskers were 5-for-5 in that area in last week's triumph. "Thursday's always a day when you want to refine what you're doing and keep the ball off of the floor and try to stay within your rhythm and build your confidence," Callahan said.
INJURY REPORT: Senior WILL linebacker Chad Sievers returned to practice Thursday after missing Wednesday with a back injury. "It's a very positive sign," Callahan said. "Hopefully he'll be ready to go full-speed on Saturday."
QUOTABLE: "In a nutshell, we're getting ready for everything. Southern Miss is one of those teams that blitzes coming off the bus" — Callahan, on the Golden Eagles' tendency to attack the quarterback.
