SI:Nebraska sports enthusiasm unmatched

Nebraskans love their sports more than any other state, according to Sports Illustrated's "Enthuse-o-meter" numbers.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, Sports Illustrated polled sports fans in each state on a variety of topics.

Nebraska sports fans rated their sports enthusiasm higher than the rest of America, coming in with an 89.1 enthusiasm rate on a 1-to-100 scale. Alabama was second at 88.8, and Kentucky third at 88.6.

The states showing the least enthusiasm for sports were Vermont (59.7), Nevada (61.9) and Idaho (62.7).

In the voting for favorite college team, Nebraska took second behind Notre Dame. The Huskers received 3 percent of the national vote (about 20,000 sports fans were surveyed). Notre Dame had 4 percent. Rounding out the top five were Florida, Michigan and Penn State, each with 2 percent of the vote.
