Callahan: NU aggressively installing new offense
Bit by bit, the West Coast offense is making its way into Lincoln.
Nebraska conducted a short-yardage scrimmage during Monday's spring football practice, and coach Bill Callahan plans on introducing goal-line plays on Wednesday
"Our installation still remains aggressive," Callahan said. "We're adding things as we move along.
"We have a number of nickel passes we have to put in for third down, and of course, we're going to continue to implement some gap schemes in our running game, to see how that looks."
Callahan said Monday's short scrimmage was effective.
"Our defense answered the call several times," he said. "It's a tough period, when you're trying to make a yard. We were in a very heavy, compacted formation. It was pretty much an isolation drill for the offense and the defense. It was very challenging on both sides of the ball."
- QUARTERBACKS IMPROVING: Callahan said he was pleased with how the quarterbacks executed during Monday's practice. "They studied this weekend and got a chance to come back and repeat plays that we had put in the initial installation, which allowed them to finally get some execution, get some repetition," he said. "We're getting some more reps at the same types of plays, which allowed them to execute better."
- PRACTICE REPORT: Nebraska followed its first off day of spring drills by working out for more than 2 hours inside Cook Pavilion. Center Richie Incognito, who suffered a minor shoulder injury Saturday, returned to practice. Receiver Isaiah Fluellen left practice with a leg injury during a special-teams workout. Callahan said he wasn't certain of the extent of the injury. "Overall, I was pleased with the energy and effort that we exhibited today in practice," Callahan said.
- ON SCHEDULE: Callahan said former defensive linemen Seppo Evwaraye, Jared Helming and Chris Patrick are performing well in their new roles as offensive linemen. On pre-spring depth charts, Evwaraye is second-string left tackle, Helming is second-string left guard and Patrick is second-string right tackle."I'm pleased with the way they've contributed and picked up," Callahan said. "There's a lot of nuances that they've had to adapt to. I think they've done very well. Sep has done a good job, and all those guys, I think, have done an excellent job of making that transition."
